Restart again on the hour…
Continue…
Until only one person is left to complete a lap
Inspired by the Backyard Ultra concept popularized in running, the Hanmer Springs Mountain Bike BackYard Ultra (HSMtbBYU) replaces epic routes and remote checkpoints with something deceptively simple: a loop ridden every hour on the hour until only one rider can complete the loop.
On this occasion, participants must cover a 10.5 kilometre loop with 173 meters of elevation, on some of Hanmer Springs prime mountain bike trails.
The Hanmer Springs Forest Camp is the race HQ, and competitors will have to erect a gazebo or tent for their support team to store their tools, food, and extra clothing they need. The challenge starts at 9am and participants complete as many laps as they can. They choose between pushing hard and enjoying some extra rest before the start of the next loop or take it easier and arrive at Race HQ with just enough time to be pampered and prepared for the next loop by their support team.
What makes this event particularly special is how accessible it is compared to traditional ultra events. In long-distance races, riders must contend with complex navigation, unpredictable weather, sleep deprivation, and minimal support, all while carrying everything they might need. By contrast, the MtbBYU format removes many of those barriers. With a fixed loop that always brings riders back to the same location, participants remain close to food, tools, spare gear, and if needed, moral support from friends and family.
Logistics are simpler, making it possible for first timers to dip their toes into the ultra-world without needing extensive bikepacking experience. In many ways, it’s a distilled version of ultra racing, the mental and physical challenges remain, but they’re delivered in a format that invites more people to the start line.
Unlike mass-start races that reward explosive efforts and early surges in power, success in the MtbBYU format depends almost entirely on consistency. Riders who push too hard early on may struggle later in the event, when fatigue and darkness set in. Others choose to ride conservatively, completing each loop with time to spare for eating, stretching, or even a quick nap.
For the whole event, riders go through the same ride, recover, repeat cycle. Some riders find their flow and treat each hour like a time trial. Others use the in-between moments to socialize, repair their bikes, or reflect. Strategy becomes as important as physical strength.
It’s during the night hours that the mental side of the sport comes into full view, with every loop completed after midnight becoming a small victory. And yet, there’s something strangely comforting about the shared struggle. While ultra riding is often portrayed as a solitary pursuit, events like this foster a real sense of community. Riders chat during the laps, cheer each other on, and built a kind of quiet camaraderie that will last far beyond the final lap.
You don’t need to be a hardened ultra veteran to enter. Many participants are everyday mountain bikers, with a little curiosity and a lot of determination. The key is preparation: not just physical training, but dialling in your bike fit, figuring out which food your stomach can tolerate, and getting used to the stop-start rhythm.
The event format is an invitation to push boundaries in a way that feels challenging but not crushing, competitive but not cutthroat. For many, the Hanmer Springs Mountain Bike BackYard Ultra is a chance to test the waters before diving into longer, more remote adventures. For others, it’s a satisfying challenge in its own right, with just enough hardship to feel proud of, and just enough comfort to make you want to come back.
If you’ve ever wondered whether an ultra is for you, this might be the place to find out.
The Backyard Ultra format is a unique twist on traditional mountain bike racing that we are borrowing from ultra running. Instead of fixed distances like 30, 60, or 100 kilometres, this event revolves around a shorter 10.5 kilometre course with no predetermined finish time or distance. Riders start a new lap every hour, on the hour, and the race continues as long as at least two competitors remain. The last rider to complete a lap is the finisher!
No problem! The Hanmer Springs Mountainbike BackYard Ultra is designed to challenge riders of all levels. Whether you're here to outlast the competition, training for other events, aiming to set a personal record for your longest ride, or simply looking to connect with the mountain biking community, this event has something for everyone. Plus, Hanmer Springs will have weather-appropriate activities for spectators and family members, making it a memorable day for all!
It's early March in Hanmer Springs, so anything could happen. Whatever the weather, we ride! Dress appropriately and get ready for an adventure.
Sorry, no Ebikes will be allowed to enter this event.

Location
The Hanmer Springs Mountain Bike BackYard Ultra will be run out of the Hanmer Springs Forest Camp, 243 Jollies Pass Road.
The Forest Camp is one of three accommodation options we recommend.
What might you expect?
Current New Zealand Records
The HSMtbBYU is maybe the first MtbBYU in the world. There have been cycling BYU’s but on sealed roads, and gravel, and not necessarily running more than 24hrs. This could be a World First. What ever records that are set here will be NZ Records, and perhaps World Records. How many laps and what milage can we do?
Once Finished
Ring the Bell.
Please ensure you come and see the timing desk when you finally cannot go on any further. We’ll DNF you in the system, take your DNF photo, hand out your DNF certificate (which includes the number of laps completed.)
Once you’ve finished your event, you’re welcome to stay at the venue and in your tent site, cheering on the other ultra riders. In fact, we encourage it!
Event Centre Refreshments
There is a kitchen available for access to hot water, and cooking facilities. And just a couple of kilometres from the event centre, in the village are numerous cafes, restaurants take-aways, and a supermarket.
Power, Water, etc
There is mains power onsite, and a good supply of water.
There are showers & toilets on site.
Tent Sites
Each ultra individual is allowed a roughly 4m x 4m site within the event base. This will be marked out with tape. Due to safety and ground conditions no vehicles will be allowed to be parked in the tent site area.
On arrival, drop off your gear near the tent area and then park in the areas allocated for parking. After you’ve parked, return to the tent area to set up your site. Please aim for less than five minutes to have your vehicle in the tent area.
Feel free to share a tent with others to pool resources.
We ask in your tent site placement, that you self-rank please. So, if you know you’re doing less than 10 laps, then set up at the back, between 10 and 20 laps in the middle and more than 20 laps at the front closer to the finish & corral. This will save people having to move tents later.
You are able to set up your tent site on Friday from 4pm till 9pm and then anytime from 6:30am on Saturday morning.
We highly recommend you bring old carpet or a ground sheet for your tent site.
Event Shelters
On Race Day, we are situated at Hanmer Springs Forest Camp. You are welcome to setup your own tent/shelter or you can hire a Shelter and Event KitZ from His & Hers Endurance Events.
Shelter and Event Kitz includes:
1 x 3x3m Gazebo with walls
1 x OZtrail recliner chair
1 x 50L chilli bin
1 x Tarp Floor
1 x 1.2m table
1 x 24 pocket wall hanger
Spectators
We welcome spectators to come and have a look and support all the riders, however this is at the event centre only. No spectators are allowed out in the forest, as they may be deemed support for a rider and may result in that rider’s disqualification.
No dogs are allowed in the forest or at the event centre please.
Support Crew
We recommend the Hanmer Springs Mountain Bike BackYard Ultra riders have a support crew. This is limited to a maximum of 2 people at a time (based at the riders support tent).
We’re happy to relax this a little after 12 hours and the numbers are reduced and there is more space.
General supporters can cheer/encourage/kick up the arse at the finish line etc but cannot join the rider in their tent. This is to prevent overcrowding on the course around the tents.
On Course Toileting
Silly we have to have this talk but after feedback from past events……..
Poop: Due to the public nature of the forest we use, and respect for other users, there is no poop allowed on course. Please use the loos on site at the event base for this.
Wee: Please use the forest but we ask that you take at least a few steps off the main route please, to show some respect to the other participants. They don’t need to see your junk – aw gross😲 If we get word of someone not doing this, you may be disqualified – we want an environment where all riders feel safe and respected.
Compulsory Gear
Because of the lap nature of the course there is no compulsory gear required, however, please be aware that the weather can change very quickly.
There will possibly rain, wind, and it could be very warm. This is Hanmer Springs, an Alpine village.
